چکیده

This document serves as a supplement to the material discussed in lectures 9 and 10. The document is not meant to be a comprehensive review of orientation tracking for virtual reality applications but rather an intuitive introduction to inertial measurement units (IMUs) and the basic mathematical concepts of orientation tracking with IMUs. We will use the VRduino throughout this document as an experimental platform for practical and low-cost orientation tracking.

EE 267 Virtual Reality Course Notes: 6-DOF Pose Tracking with the VRduino

Positional tracking can be implemented with a variety of technologies. Commercially-available systems include mechanical trackers, magnetic trackers, ultrasonic trackers, and GPS or WIFI-based tracking. The most widely used technology, however, is optical tracking. In optical tracking, one or more cameras observe a set of reference points, for example infrared LEDs or actively illuminated retro...

A Low-Cost, Wearable Opto-Inertial 6-DOF Hand Pose Tracking System for VR

In this paper, a low cost, wearable six Degree of Freedom (6-DOF) hand pose tracking system is proposed for Virtual Reality applications. It is designed for use with an integrated hand exoskeleton system for kinesthetic haptic feedback. The tracking system consists of an Infrared (IR) based optical tracker with low cost mono-camera and inertial and magnetic measurement unit. Image processing is...

Low-Cost Multiple Degrees-of-Freedom Optical Tracking for 3D Interaction in Head-Mounted Display Virtual Reality

Interacting with the 3D content present in games and virtual environments generally involves some form of 3D interaction. As such, the design and development of 3D spatial interaction devices are important in creating more realistic and immersive user experiences in 3D virtual environment applications through natural and intuitive human expression. In general, current commercially available 3D ...

Gaze-Dependent Depth-of-Field Effect Rendering in Virtual Environments

This paper presents gaze-dependent depth-of-field (DOF) rendering setup, consisting of high frequency eye tracker connected to a graphics workstation. A scene is rendered and visualised with the DOF simulation controlled by data captured with the eye tracker. To render a scene in real-time, the reverse-mapped z-buffer DOF simulation technique with the blurring method based on Poisson disk is us...

Tension Based 7-DOF Force Feedback Device: SPIDAR-G

In this paper, we intend to demonstrate a new intuitive force-feedback device for advanced VR applications. Force feedback for the device is tension based and is characterized by 7 degrees of freedom (DOF); 3 DOF for translation, 3 DOF for rotation, and 1 DOF for grasp). The SPIDAR-G (Space Interface Device for Artificial Reality with Grip) will allow users to interact with virtual objects natu...
